HOKUSAI "Odori" Set
HOKUSAI "Odori" Set
This Rubber Stamp Collection features carefully selected details from “The Dance Instruction Manual”*, “Sketches by Hokusai, Vol. 3”*, and “Yui, from the series The Fifty-three Stations, Coming and Going to Edo”* by Katsushika Hokusai, highlighting the lively movement and humanity of his figures.
The dancing figures—evoking Akudama-odori, in which beings symbolizing evil or calamity are turned into dance; Suzume-odori inspired by the movements of sparrows; and a rain-invoking dance said to have been passed down in Yui along the Tōkaidō—are rendered with a subtle sense of humor. Though presented as still images, the stamps fully capture the dynamic quality of Hokusai’s distinctive lines.
Rather than works meant only to be admired, these stamps are intended for repeated use and enjoyment in everyday life. With each impression on paper, the breath and presence of people from Edo seem to rise to the surface once more.
